Why would eating fish increase diabetes risk?

In the past two years, six separate meta-analyses have been published on the relationship between fish consumption and type 2 diabetes. On a per serving basis, there is a 5 per cent increase in risk for every serving of fish one has per week. To put that into perspective, a serving of red meat per day is associated with 19 per cent increase in risk. Just one serving per day of fish would be equivalent to a 35 per cent increase in risk. Industrial-scale violators of fishing bans and protected areas are a main reason more than half of the world's major fishing grounds have been depleted and by some estimates over 90 per cent of the ocean's large fish have vanished. Interpol had issued a Purple Notice on the [fishing vessel Thunder, but no government had been willing to dedicate the personnel and millions of dollars needed to go after it. Quebec, Canada bill calls animals 'sentient beings'

Animals in Quebec will be considered "sentient beings" instead of property under a bill tabled in the national assembly. Animals have biological needs, said Agriculture Minister Pierre Paradis. Paradis said the bill will put Quebec more in line with Manitoba, Ontario and British Columbia, which he noted have the strongest animal-welfare laws in the country. Paradis said the act pertains to all domesticated and farm animals and certain wild animals.   Read more...

Germany has decided to stop the cutting of poultry birds' beaks, in order to try and improve animal welfare. As a key component of animal welfare initiative "A question of attitude", Federal Agriculture Minister Christian Schmidt and the poultry industry recently signed an agreement to phase out the routine beak trimming of laying hens and turkeys.   Read more...

The bottom line is these animals are still being used for sheer entertainment in events that can cause them traumatic injuries and death - and it is unnecessary for them to be subjected to this. Are we humans so hard up for entertainment that we must amuse ourselves by watching events that can cause animals to suffer and die? ... We no longer think of cockfighting and dogfighting as legitimate entertainment. On the day Francis released [his environmental] encyclical, he tweeted, "It is contrary to human dignity to cause animals to suffer or die needlessly. #LaudatoSi." This statement is a quotation from the Catechism of the Catholic Church. But what does it mean that we should not cause animals to suffer or die needlessly? Surely this admonition demands more of us than that we not personally injure and kill animals.
