Peace on Earth, but for whom?
Full story: Vancouver Sun, Canada

Most people desire peace for everyone - family, friends, community, country, and nations of the earth. But if only people are included, peace on Earth will remain a dream. Why? Because as Albert Schweitzer, the French philosopher, physician, musician, and winner of the 1952 Nobel Peace Prize pointed out: "Until he extends the circle of his compassion to all living things, man will not himself find peace."   Read more...

How animal sanctuaries can heal our hearts
Full story: Care2

Providing love, care and a happy ending for all those rescued from not so lucky circumstances, animal sanctuaries not only give hope and healing to the animals that reside there but also to the humans who visit. What makes animal sanctuaries truly unique, especially those that are home to farm animals and others that have been used in exploitative ways, is the opportunity to see these beautiful creatures in a completely different light. One of the most heartwarming stories, and one where we can see the vital role of animal sanctuaries for human healing, is that of Harold Brown in the deeply moving documentary Peaceable Kingdom.   Read more...

Video: The entire IPCC in haiku
Video source: Sightline Institute

What if we could communicate the essence of [reports released by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC)] in plain language and pictures? Well, that's just what one Northwest oceanographer has done. He's distilled the entire report into 19 illustrated haiku. The result is stunning, sobering, and brilliant. It's poetry. It's a work of art. But it doubles as clear, concise, powerful talking points and a compelling visual guide. [More here.]   Watch video...

'Every little bit helps' is a dangerous mantra for climate change
Full story: The Guardian, UK

A major two-day conference at the Royal Society headquarters in London made clear, "every little bit helps" is a dangerously misleading mantra when it comes to climate change. The Radical Plan meeting featured contributions from across the physical and social sciences, as well as civil society. The organisers posed contributors a brutally simple question: what would need to happen if we were to do more than simply pay lip service to the idea of avoiding dangerous climate change? The answers were undeniably radical - and none mentioned re-using plastic bags.   Read more...

Tax meat to cut methane emissions, say scientists
Full story: Guardian, UK

Meat should be taxed to encourage people to eat less of it, so reducing the production of global warming gases from sheep, cattle and goats, according to a group of scientists. The scientists' analysis, published in the journal Nature Climate Change, takes the contentious step of suggesting methane emissions be cut by pushing up the price of meat through a tax or emissions trading scheme. Pete Smith, a professor of soils and global change at the University of Aberdeen, and one of the authors of the report, said: "Our study showed that one of the most effective ways to cut methane is to reduce global populations of ruminant livestock, especially cattle."   Read more...

6 things to bring to holiday dinner
Full story: Lani Muelrath Blog

For those of us who have opted out of flesh for feasts, simply sitting down to the family gathering with a big, lifeless and featherless bird in the center of the table can present a challenge - and at the least offend the sensibilities. Yet it's possible to participate without being a killjoy. For one thing - trust me - your choices DO have an impact, even if made light of in the moment. It's all planting seeds.
