April 2015 - There Were Two Great IWLA Events!

IWLA 2015 Spring Conference

The spring conference on Thursday, April 16 was a great success with good attendance, delicious food and excellent speakers. We had some of the highest ratings for speakers at any conference in recent memory.

With the recent dramatic changes in the exchange rate for the Canadian dollar and the drop in the price of oil, Paul Ferley of the Royal Bank of Canada provided an outlook for what these changes will mean to the Canadian economy and the warehousing and logistics industry.

Sheldon Basch of BDO Canada presented a review of the importance of cost accounting to any business and Mark Thomas of the Schulich Executive Education Centre at York University gave a review of some of the educational offerings that Schulich provides. These are highly complementary to IWLA's courses.

The afternoon was highlighted by two panel discussions:

Warehouse Management Systems - Peter Reaume moderated the discussion and Anthony Allwood, Joe Couto and Terry Vukosa participated. The group provided an insiders' candid view of WMS and some of the challenges encountered in its implementation and operation.

Onboarding a Customer - Andrew Kirkpatrick hosted this panel discussion and Irene Berezny, Kent Hunter and Rebecca Garland participated. As a group, they gave an excellent perspective on what it takes to begin the relationship with the new customer.

Overall, reviews were very positive and attendees appreciated the value of the content and the opportunity to network with their fellow logistics and warehouse professionals. Conference presentations can be viewed on the IWLA website.

Sobeys Vaughan Retail Service Centre

On April 29, members of IWLA toured Sobeys Vaughan Retail Service Centre. It was an eye opener for everyone, with automation and innovation giving Sobeys high throughput and efficient material handling. And while the systems were particularly interesting to those with automated systems, the ideas and concepts were also understood and appreciated by those with more traditional systems. There were ideas for everyone to take home.

IWLA-Canada 2015 Golf Tournament

U.S. demand to fuel Canadian export growth
Source: MM&D

A new report from Export Development Canada (EDC) suggests there is no time like the present for Canadian firms to export their goods to the United States. The agency's latest global export forecast predicts industrial capacity constraints within the U.S. will be a key driver of global economic growth over the next two years. A higher U.S. dollar is also making foreign investments and imports more attractive. The EDC says those factors are creating a "huge opportunity for Canadian companies to meet the U.S. economy's need for goods, services, and production capacity."   Read more...

Infrastructure big winner in 2015 Ontario Budget

Proclaiming that gridlock is "choking" the provincial economy, Finance Minister Charles Sousa announced a 10-year, $130-billion infrastructure plan in the 2015 Ontario budget. For transportation infrastructure specifically, the budget boosts the funding previously announced in the 2014 budget for roads, bridges and transit available through the Moving Ontario Forward plan from nearly $29 billion to $31.5 billion.   Read more...

The Quebecois government has promised $200 million to accelerate investment in commercial port infrastructure in the province. Ontario and Québec collaborate to reduce carbon emissions
Source: Lexology

Ontario announced [April 13] that it will impose a cap-and-trade system under the Western Climate Initiative, which it joined in 2008. The "cap" will set a maximum limit on the amount of greenhouse gas emissions that industry can produce in Ontario. The "trade" will create a market for carbon credits distributed or auctioned by the government. Companies that do not use all their credits can sell to emitters that exceed the cap. Ontario and Québec also announced a statement of intent to reduce carbon emissions through a linked cap-and-trade system.   Read more...

Opinion: Canada's economic future is on the Seaway
Source: Baystreet.ca

If the Great Lakes-St. Lawrence Region were a country, it would be the third largest economy in the world in terms of economic activity ($5.5 trillion U.S.). It's a vital gateway for moving products of all kinds to continental and global markets. But because of the region's size, and the border which runs through it, policy makers at all levels in Canada and the U.S. still fail to see the critical nature of the region as a hub of economic potential.   Read more...

How cloud enables and supports the lean warehouse
Source: Manufacturing.net

For many manufacturers and distributors, a seamless supply chain of highly efficient and tightly integrated business processes sharing a single unified source of accurate real-time data seems an unachievable goal. That's not surprising since such organizations are struggling to gain control over their entire supply chain using a mix of disparate systems that fail to fully mesh with one another creating silos of outdated and unreliable information.  Read more...

Yard management systems take flight

As the software systems that track the movement of trucks, trailers, and other assets in the yard of a warehouse, distribution center, or manufacturing facility, YMS fills in a critical gap left open by traditional transportation management systems (TMS) and warehouse management systems (WMS).   Read more...

What's really driving driver turnover
Source: FleetOwner

A survey conducted by TMW Systems last year turned up some surprising trend data about what's really driving driver turnover - and it's not always about wages. According to TMW's findings, three other factors are influencing turnover rates: the tractor-to-driver manager ratio, utilization rates, and length of haul.   Read more...
