November Webinar - Monday, November 16 @ 2pm EST
We are excited to, once again, have Dave Larocque presenting our November Webinar on "Everything You Wanted to Know About the Top 5 RED Varietals" (but were afraid to ask). In September, Dave presented a similar webinar on the top 5 white varietals which was very well received by our members.

Discover the unique differences of the top 5 red varietals; Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah, Pinot Noir and Malbec. By looking at their origin, growing conditions (cool climate versus warm climate), winemaking styles, aroma and flavour profiles, food matching, age ability and serving temperatures, we can better understand and appreciate each grape variety and its importance in our wine cellar.

Dave Larocque has lived his love for wine for over 30 years, initially as a product consultant with the LCBO, then subsequently working at many Ontario wineries, and as a wine educator and trainer for Canadian winery staff, Niagara College, the Wine Council of Ontario, and staff of numerous restaurants. He has recently authored a book titled The Wine Appellations of Ontario. His newest venture, Wine Culture, brings the enjoyment of wine to groups across Canada through presentations and tastings in an educational and entertaining approach.

As one of the many benefits of being a CCWA member, this in-depth Webinar is available for Premium Members only.

If you wish to participate in this informative and interactive Webinar, please email Michael Hind at executivedirector@canadiancraftwine.ca to request your login information prior to the Webinar.

British Columbia Update
The BC Council of the CCWA was represented in Toronto on October 19th 2015 at the CCWA Board of Directors and Annual General Meetings. Gaylor Kozak, BC Council Chairperson participated in these meetings. These meetings represented a group working on providing our industry with the tools for increasing the success of our industry.

It is encouraging to see representation from manufacturers, suppliers and storeowners.

Over the next several weeks and months, the BC Council will be working on increasing membership. Providing knowledge and value of being a member of a national association is a key focus

Ontario Update
Meetings and conversations continue with the Alcohol & Gaming Commission (AGCO) in regards to changes in the provincial regulations.
  • The limitations of serving consumer made wine and beer under the current special occasions permit rules.
  • The requirement for pre-approval prior to advertising.
  • The difficulty in relocating wines in process.
  • Craft wine and beer at charity events.

We have also recently been invited to attend an AGCO meeting in Toronto in late November to discuss creating a range of online service delivery capabilities for their licensees and registrants (online forms, etc.). They have asked for up to 5 of our store retailers to attend. Would you like to help to make changes in our industry? If you wish to attend, please contact Michael Hind at executivedirector@canadiancraftwine.ca.

The Ontario Council, along with the other Regional Councils, are in the process of planning activities and events in our regions for our next fiscal year that begins in May 2016. The focus of these activities and events would be to further support our membership, provide education and opportunities to network with fellow retailers. Once these ideas are captured, they will be presented to the national CCWA Board of Directors in January for approval and implementation. More information will be shared with our members as we develop these programs.

  • Atlantic Canada Update
The Regional Councils met with the CCWA National Board of Directors in October where each region brought to the table regional issues/goals. We discussed issues that pertain to the Atlantic Provinces such as the PEI levy, a conference for 2016 and a membership drive. These ideas will be further flushed out and presented to the CCWA National Board of Directors at a meeting in January 2016 for approval. More to follow in the next E-News.

The Wine Council of Ontario has created the Sustainable Winemaking Ontario program to advance and assist with the integration of more environmentally-friendly practices. The first of its kind in Canada, it lays out best-practice guidelines. Currently close to 30 Ontario wineries are part of the voluntary program.   Read more...
